The Archaeology Department of Pázmány Péter Catholic University, in collaboration with the Archaeology Directorate General of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Archaeology Department of Salahaddin University in Erbil, began archaeological research at Dwin Castle and its surrounding area in November 2014. This project was initiated under a concession agreement signed with the Archaeology Directorate General of the Kurdistan Regional Government.
The first fieldwork season included an archaeological field survey of Dwin Castle and its surroundings, as well as comprehensive 3D laser scanning and aerial photography of the fortress. Additionally, a preliminary architectural periodization of the castle was completed, and geophysical measurements were carried out on the southern slope of the castle hill and a nearby site.
The first phase of the research was conducted in partnership with several organizations, including the Department of Industrial and Agricultural Building Design at the Budapest University of Technology, Mensor3D, the Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs, and ArcLand. The project is supported by the MOL Group.
In the coming fieldwork seasons, the Kurdish and Hungarian teams will continue their investigations in and around Dwin Castle.
